Saxeville Union Cemetery History
Founded on May 27th, 1886, the cemetery was originally named the Saxeville East Cemetery. It was later renamed as the Saxeville Union Cemetery following a vote by the Saxeville Cemetery Association on April 24th, 1954. Captain Edward Saxe, the founder of the village Saxeville, despite being buried at the Shiloh National Cemetery in Tennessee, is honored with a memorial at the Saxeville Union Cemetery. This memorial also commemorates his wife, Kate V. Saxe, who is buried there.
Edward Saxe was a miller, the 1860 Census taker, and organized the Waushara Rangers before becoming a Captain in Company A of the 16th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry for the Union in the Civil War. The Saxeville Union Cemetery is not only a resting place for Captain Saxe’s memorial but is also home to at least 23 other veterans, marking it as a site of historical significance.
